IRCC Processes Highest-ever Immigration Applications in 2022

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) processed 4.8 million applications in 2022

Canada’s immigration department created a record by processing the highest number of immigration applications this year. It doubled its application processing over last year by reducing half a million applications since August 2022. The application processing speed puts Canada in a firm position to admit 431,000 permanent residents as the year ends. Canada will break the record of welcoming new permanent residents for the second consecutive year.

The maximum contribution comes from the temporary residence category, as IRCC processed 670,000 study permits and 700,000 work permits in 2022.

The number of new Canadian citizens touched 251,000 from April to November.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada can now process most study permits within the service standard of 60 days.

Immigration Boosts Canada’s Workforce

Several new policies speed up the immigration of workers to meet Canada’s labor market demands. Canada removed the cap on weekly work hours temporarily to allow post-secondary international students to work for more hours. Spouses of temporary workers can now get work permits besides their working-age dependents.

Streamlining Immigration through Modernization

Hon. Sean Fraser, Canada’s immigration minister, informed that Canada continues to support immigrants coming to Canada to visit, study, work or settle. IRCC is working hard to clear the massive backlog of immigration applications following office closures and travel restrictions during the pandemic.

The strategy to adopt digital technologies for application processing resulted in the total digitalization of citizenship applications. The immigration department is also strengthening its workforce by hiring 1,250 new staff this year.
