Decision Allowing Permanent Residents to Join Canadian Army Receives Encouraging Response
In the last two months, Canadian Armed Forces received over 6,000 applications from new permanent residents, confirming the growing interest among new permanent residents in joining the military. The CAF dropped the requirement of Canadian citizenship as the primary criterion to become part of the military.
Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), in its Nov 22 announcement, declared that new permanent residents would be eligible to join the military. There will be no minimum residency requirements for new permanent residents desiring to join the military. New immigrants have the required physical fitness to join the military as they migrate to Canada at a younger age.
At the time of the announcement, the Canadian military had 12,000 vacant positions in regular force troops. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police also announced the decision to permit permanent residents living in Canada for over ten years to apply.
Earlier, permanent residents could join the military only under the Skilled Military Foreign Applicant Entry Program (SMFA). The program allowed trained pilots and doctors to join the military to minimize the training costs. The inclusion of new permanent residents into the Canadian Armed Forces is helpful to address the severe shortages because of hundreds of vacant positions across ranks.
