Canada’s Transition to NOC 2021 will Influence Express Entry Candidates
Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship (IRCC) switched to NOC 2021 from NOC 1016, effective Nov 16, 2022, from NOC 2016.
Following the announcement on Jul 27, 2022, regarding the transition to the new version of the National Occupation Classification, the NOC 2021 comes into force effective Nov 16, 2022. The decision will impact eligibility for over 100 immigration programs.
NOC 2021 and Express Entry eligibility
Candidates applying for immigration through the Express Entry system should note the changes impacting eligibility criteria for various programs. The NOC 2021 will cause a remarkable shift in the classification of the selection factors.
The NOC 2016 classified the work experience by assigning skill levels, viz. 0, A, B, C, and D. The new NOC 2021 comprises five TEER (Training, Education, Experience, and Responsibilities) categories. These are TEER 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
These are the corresponding NOC 2021 TEER categories to NOC 2016 skill levels.
TEER 0– NOC Skill Level 0
TEER 1– NOC Skill Level A
TEER 2– NOC Skill Level B
TEER 3– NOC Skill Level B
TEER 4– NOC Skill Type C
TEER 5– NOC Skill Type D
The candidates leveraging the Express Entry system for immigration should take the following actions as per individual situations:
Planning to submit the Express Entry profile– Enter the relevant NOC 2021occupation code in the Express Entry profile.
Awaiting Invitation to Apply (ITA)– Update Express Entry Profile after finding their five-digit Occupation Code and TEER category by visiting the ESDC portal.
Received Invitation to Apply (ITA)– before Nov 16, 2021- Submit Express Entry application mentioning code as per NOC 2016.
