Canada to Expand Visa Processing Facilities at Delhi and Chandigarh
Canada’s new strategic initiatives include an investment of $74.6 million to enhance the visa processing capacity in Delhi and Chandigarh.
The new Indo-Pacific Strategy eyes India as a crucial partner and hopes to invest more in people-centric activities such as immigration. The Strategy will also expand visa processing in Manila and Islamabad. Canada will continue bolstering ties with India by planning new initiatives in the trade and immigration sectors. It is the step towards drafting a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement.
The new Indo-Pacific Strategy comprises five aspects to establish stronger ties with countries in the Indo-Pacific region. Canada includes India in four out of five strategic objectives. These are:
Trade
Environment
Supply chains
People-people contacts
The Indo-Pacific region accounts for $226 billion worth of annual bilateral trade. It is the largest regional export market for Canada after the US.
India continues to be the top deliverer of permanent residents
India was the top source of immigrants to Canada in 2021 despite the international travel restrictions. It was the only country to grow the number of immigrants over the last year. India remained in the top position, followed by China, the Philippines, and Nigeria.
The 2022 projections place India as the number one contributor to Canada’s immigration, as the approximate rise in the number of Indian-origin immigrants over 2021 will be 15 percent.
Economic immigration programs are the most sought-after pathways for immigration to Canada. These include the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). These programs accounted for over 95 percent of new immigrants to Canada.
