Canada Shrinks Immigration Backlog to 1.2 million Applications
Canada is witnessing a drop in immigration backlogs as the result of plans by the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)
IRCC announced that Canada’s immigration backlog dropped to 1.2 million from 1.49 million.
As of Oct 31, 2022, the immigration inventory was 2.2 million applications against 2.6 million as of Sep 30, 2022. The latest data shows that over 1.04 million immigration applications are within the service standards.
The backlog of immigration applications refers to the number of applications in the inventories longer than service standards. The current inventory for immigration applications comprises all applications in the process besides 1.04 applications within service standards. It also includes a backlog of 1.2 million immigration applications not within service standards.
A brief review of immigration applications
The number of applications within inventory Nov 16, 2022:
Temporary residence – The current inventory for the temporary residence applications is 1,304,000 with 525,210 applications within service standards and 778,790 applications in the backlog.
Permanent residence – The number of permanent residence applications in the inventory is 603,700, including 279,700 applications within service standards and 324,000 applications in the backlog.
Citizenship – IRCC reported that out of 332,000 citizenship applications, 323,000 are within service standards, and 100,000 are in the backlog.

Permanent residents – 46 percent
Citizenship – 70 percent

Backlog reduction plan By the IRCC
IRCC plans to reduce wait times, besides developing a new task force to enhance government services. The immigration department plans to hire 1,250 employees to bolster IRCC’s processing capacity.
IRCC plans a switch to 100 percent digitization using software applications to implement most permanent residence programs.
Projections for reducing the backlog by Dec 2022
Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) predicts that there will be a 20 percent backlog of Provincial Nominee Program and federal high skilled PR applications by the end of 2022.
The forecast also suggests a 25 percent backlog of citizenship applications and a 19 percent backlog for family sponsorship applications.
