Canada Rolls Out New Open Work Permit Pathway for H-1B Visa Holders
Canada’s long-awaited Open Work Permit for H-1B Visa holders from the US is open effective July 16, 2023.
The US H-1B visa holders are now eligible for a new open work permit as Canada launches the new work permit stream on July 16, 2023. The new open work permit will facilitate several workers in the Tech sector to explore lucrative work opportunities in the Great White North. It will also benefit family members of H-1B visa holders who can join them.
The Open Work Permit is valid for up to three years, allowing eligible applicants to work for any Canadian employer. Family members of the open work permit holders are also eligible to study, work and live in Canada. The applicant must be living in the US on an H-1B visa. The intake capacity of these work permits is 10,000. It means close family members of 10,000 H-1B visa holders will qualify to apply for temporary resident permits, study permits, and work permits.
The H-1B visa holders can explore the Express Entry pathway to become Canadian permanent residents by getting at least one year of Canadian work experience. The work experience will help them score higher CRS rankings under Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) through the Express Entry selection system.
