Canada Restores Biometrics Requirements for Permanent Residency Applicants
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) lifted the temporary exemption of the biometrics requirement for applicants of Permanent Residence on June 14, 2023.
IRCC announced the restoration of pre-pandemic procedures, including the exemption of biometrics for foreign nationals applying for permanent residence through its latest delivery update. Permanent Residence (PR) applications from June 14 will require the submission of biometrics. The resumption of biometrics requirements will apply to all PR applicants unless otherwise exempt.
Canada lifted the biometrics requirement for Permanent Residence applicants in response to the COVID-19 pandemic as a temporary measure. The new policy of biometrics requirement will not apply to permanent residence applicants who submitted their applications before June 14, 2023.
Purpose of biometrics
Canada uses biometrics to establish an individual’s identity through distinctive physical characteristics. New immigrants provide fingerprints and photographs while submitting biometrics. The biometrics data on file restricts instances like identity theft, ensuring the safety of Canadian immigrants. Biometrics helps resolve issues because of the identical personal information of two or more immigrants, such as name, date of birth, and place of birth.
