Canada Relaxes Band Score Criterion in IELTS for Study Permit Applicants

Effective August 10, 2023, study visa applicants through Student Direct Stream will require an overall score of 6 in the IELTS Academic instead of 6 bands in each module.

According to the recent announcement by IDP Education, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will accept an overall IELTS Academic score of 6.0 bands. A student scoring 5 in Speaking and Listening and 7 in Reading and Writing will have an overall score of 6, making them eligible for a study permit through the Student Direct Stream. Study permit applicants aspiring to pursue study programs in Canada under the Student Direct Stream will not require a minimum score of 6 bands in the IELTS Academic test.

The relaxation in IELTS language test requirements will help students from several countries apply for study permits through SDS, including those from India. The Student Direct Stream expedites the study permit application process for applicants from many participant countries. IELTS is the most sought-after language test, providing an extensive network of test centers. Study Permit aspirants can take the English Language Proficiency Test at their preferred center in over eighty Indian cities.
