Canada Extends Work Permit Eligibility to Visitors

Visitors to Canada can apply for Work Permit if they get a job offer.

Canada’s policy to grant work permits to visitors with a job offer will remain in force until February 28, 2025. The work permit policy was active during the pandemic era and was to expire on February 28, 2023. According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), foreign visitors to Canada can get a work permit if they receive a job offer during their stay in Canada.

Earlier, a visitor willing to work in Canada had to apply for a work permit from outside Canada. The new policy eliminates the need to apply for a work permit before arriving in Canada. The policy was in response to travel restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic, which aggravated labor shortages. However, it needs an extension because of record unemployment rates.

The most severe labor shortages are in the following sectors:

Healthcare and social assistance – 149,800 vacancies

Accommodation and food services – 108,000 vacancies

Retail trade – 100,200 vacancies

The policy requires a visitor who receives a job offer to meet standard eligibility criteria, such as admissibility, besides holding status as a visitor on the date of application for a work permit. They should have an LMIA-exempt or LMIA-approved job offer and apply for an employer-specific work permit.
