BREAKING: Immigration Services About to Interrupt as PSAC Workers Will Strike Work from April 19
Public Service Workers in Canada, including those at Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada, are going on strike from April 19, 2023.
Canada is about to witness the largest strike in its history as 155,000 Public Service workers go on strike on April 19.
Mr. Chris Aylward, President of Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), announced that the strike to begin at 12:01 am Eastern Wednesday. The national president made this announcement after the deadline to address the union’s issues at the bargaining table elapsed.
The PSAC strike will affect several government services, including immigration and revenue. The strike follows a strike vote in January 2023 that received overwhelming support from most members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), Canada’s largest public service union.
How will the strike impact Canadians?
There will be severe delays while accessing federal services if the strike continues longer. Canada’s tax department has 34,000 employees from the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) who will be on strike. It will affect the filing of tax returns before the May 1 deadline.
The PSAC strike will have an extensive effect on a broad spectrum of services as a sizeable chunk of PSAC members includes 120,000 employees serving as:
Cooks on military bases
Clerks
Maintenance workers
Coastguard search and rescue workers
Employment insurance processing employees
Immigration documents processing employees
Passport application processing employees
Firefighters
Teachers
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada(IRCC)is another department to suffer from the strike. The strike will worsen the IRCC services that are reeling under the mounting backlog of applications and lengthy processing times.
