Better Post-study Work Opportunities Make Canada Top Student Destination Country
A recent survey involving international students, observed that Canada is their top choice because of access to better post-study work opportunities.
In March 2023, IDP Education conducted the Emerging Futures study involving over 21,000 international students from Vietnam, India, Taiwan, Nigeria, and Thailand. The last IDP Education survey was in August 2022.
Canada, the US, the UK, and Australia are important destination countries for international students. The respondents of the survey selected Canada as the most rewarding study destination. Canada’s post-study programs make international students prefer Canada over other countries, as per the report.
Post-study work pathways are the main differentiators that drive Canada’s popularity among international students. The IDP survey observed that over 65 percent of students are keen to get international work experience after their studies. The duration of stay in Canada emerged as another reason for the choice of study destination.
The survey confirmed more international students choose their destination country by considering the availability of career pathways. Canada facilitates students to work for any employer after finishing studies under Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). They can work for up to three years through the PGWP.
A minimum of eight months of study program in a Designated Learning Institute leading to post-secondary credentials qualifies the student for Canada’s Post Graduate Work Permit.
The PGWP is a suitable pathway to get Canadian work experience and improve eligibility for selection through Canada’s Express Entry applicant management system. Express Entry is the most popular pathway to becoming a permanent resident under Canada’s main economic immigration programs and Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs).
