Alberta Hikes Immigration Intake to Address Acute Shortage of Skilled Workers
Alberta needs to fill over 100,000 vacant job positions to sustain its booming economic growth.
Canada’s federal government responded positively to Alberta’s long-standing demand to boost its annual immigration quota. Alberta’s new quota of provincial nominations for 2023 is 9,750, as against 6,500 in 2022. The province will issue 10,140 and 10,849 nominations in 2024 and 2025, respectively. With the increase in the number of immigrants it can welcome, Alberta is on its way to maintaining the province’s economic growth in the face of historic labor shortages.
Alberta’s 2023 immigration strategies
Alberta aims to bolster the economy of its rural parts by leveraging the most sought-after streams of the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP). The Rural Entrepreneur and Rural Renewal streams of AAIP will help Alberta attract skilled workers to the rural parts. It will spread the new immigrants across the province and away from Alberta’s urban centers.
The province developed mechanisms to process applications to its Provincial Nominee Program and launched several new immigration pathways in 2022. Alberta added 120,000 new jobs since the beginning of 2021. The present number of job vacancies in Alberta is a whopping 74,140. By 2025, there will be a requirement of 33,100 skilled workers across sectors and occupations.
Aspiring immigrants can benefit from the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program to find jobs in diverse sectors across all occupations and skill levels. Temporary Foreign Workers, International Graduates, and entrepreneurs can apply for permanent residence through multiple pathways of the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP).
