eTA

Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)

An eTA or Electronic Travel Authorization is for those foreign nationals exempt from visa. The eTA is automatically connected to your travel document and is valid for five years or the expiry date of the passport. You must file for a fresh eTA if you apply for and receive a new passport.
The eTA allows you to fly to Canada frequently for short stays of up to six months at a time. However, having an eTA does not guarantee entry. The border services authorities will check the documents and decide on your admissibility.

The Process

The eTA application process is simple and online. Make sure you apply before booking your flight tickets to Canada. You must have your passport and payment instruments such as credit or debit card handy for making the online payment. Fill the online form with the relevant details to proceed. The steps are:

  • Make a payment of $7 CAD after completing the form
  • You will receive an email about the eTA application status.
  • Most applications are processed and approved in a few minutes. Some may take a longer time.
  • You may be asked to submit some additional documents for approval

After you get an approval for your eTA is application, make sure the passport details mentioned in the email is the same as the one on your passport. If there is a discrepancy, you must apply for a new eTA.
Things You Must Carry To the Airport
When the Canadian authorities approve your eTA, they will link the passport to the eTA. You need not print any special document when you check in to your flight to Canada. Just present your passport to complete the process. If you don’t have a valid eTA, you will not be able to board the flight.

Eligibility

To be able to transit or fly to any Canadian airport, you need either a visitor visa or an eTA.
The following persons will need an eTA:

  • A foreign national, exempt from visa, flying to or transiting through a Canadian airport
  • Residents of the United States flying to Canada or passing through any Canadian airport.

You may be qualified to apply for eTA (and not a visitor visa) if you are from any specific country where a visa is needed, and you are travelling to Canada by air. A dual Canadian citizen can travel with a Canadian passport. American-Canadians can travel using either a Canadian or U.S. passport.

Inadmissibility

Getting an eTA is no guarantee for a smooth entry to Canada. The services officer will check your passport and other documents, such as a U.S. Green Card at the border. The officer must be convinced that you are eligible for entry to Canada.
Few things can make you inadmissible. These include indulgence, accusation, or conviction in criminal activity, organized crime, or human rights violation. You might also be denied entry for security, financial or medical reasons.

How To Apply:

Applying for eTA is a simple process that can be completed online. Most eTA approvals can be completed within minutes and get approved quickly. Some may take some time and may require the submission of additional documents. You can use
