Yukon Nominee Program (YNP)

Yukon Nominee Program (YNP)

Located in the far northwest of Canada, Yukon has a population of around 30,000. Most of them live in the capital Whitehorse. Mining and tourism are the main occupations of the province. Immigrants with specific skills and expertise as required by the province can expect a provincial nomination from YNP or Yukon Nominee Program.

Overview:

The Yukon Nominee Program was launched in 2002 to attract immigrants to fill the gaps in the province’s labor market. There is a demand for skilled workers and entrepreneurs with the requisite work experience and qualifications to succeed in the territory. Every year, a few hundred immigrants are approved for permanent residence.

There is one enhanced category and a few base categories. The former is called Yukon Express Entry, which aligns with the country’s Express Entry system. A base category is not aligned.

The Canadian Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) use the Express Entry system to control the critical immigration programs. Applicants with an Express Entry profile are given a point score based on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Express Entry draws are held at regular intervals. The top-ranked candidates can apply for permanent residence in the province. Those applying after getting nominated are awarded an additional 600 CRS points. They also get an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence in the next draw.

Enhanced immigration streams fast track the processing. It is completed in six months or less. For base streams, the task may take around 12 months.

Yukon Immigration Categories:

There are five options to choose from

  • Yukon Express Entry (YEE)
  • Skilled Worker
  • Critical Impact Worker
  • Business Nominee
  • Yukon Community Pilot

The Yukon Express Entry (YEE)

This category is for skilled immigrants with a full-time and permanent local job offer. Employers unable to fill job openings with local labor can use the services of immigrants with the requisite skills and experience to fill up open positions.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must satisfy the requirements of one of the three economic immigration programs of Canada
  • Must have an approved Express Entry profile
  • Must have the finances to support self and family needs in the province
  • Must have a full-time job offer from a local company
  • Must exhibit an intent to live and work in the province

How It Works:

You must have a valid local job offer that the employer could not fill with local labor. You must also be financially stable to settle in Canada comfortably. Complete and submit the YEE form to get an Invitation to Apply from IRCC. You must provide all documents needed to complete an application for permanent residence. After the IRCC and the local immigration unit verifies all your documents, you will be approved for the same.

The Skilled Worker Program

This program is for immigrant workers skilled in specific work areas and sponsored by a local employer for Canadian permanent residence.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must have the qualifications and experience needed for the job
  • Must have at least one year of experience in the specified occupation
  • Applicants in Canada must have a valid work permit and a job offer from a local employer
  • Must meet minimum language requirements

How It Works:

The employer must advertise the job opening locally and nationally to ensure no local or national talent is presently available for the responsibility. The job offered to the immigrant is full-time and permanent. You must submit all the forms and documents and an application to the local immigration authority. After reviewing and approving the application, you will be nominated if all the papers are in order. You can use the nomination to apply for a work permit and a permanent residence with the IRCC. The work permit allows you to work in Canada while your application for permanent residence is processed. If you clear all the checks, you will be offered a permanent residency in Canada.

The Critical Impact Worker Program

This program is for semi-skilled or unskilled workers working in a high-demand occupation in the territory and sponsored by a local employer. A valid job offer from a Yukon employer is mandatory.

Minimum Requirements:

  • A permanent job offer
  • The qualification and education, and work experience required for the job
  • Six months of relevant work experience
  • A valid work permit
  • Minimum language requirement in English or French

How It Works:

You must have a local job offer from an employer who has ensured that no Canadian citizen is available to fill that opening. You must complete the forms and documents requested and submit the application to the YNP. After they approve the employer, your application will be reviewed. If approved, you can get a nomination and then apply for a temporary work permit and an application for permanent residence with the IRCC. You can use the work permit to work in Canada while your application is processed.

The Business Nominee Program

This program is for entrepreneurs with proven business expertise and wants to launch a new business, operate an existing business, or partner with an existing business in Yukon. You must be willing to make a significant investment in the proposed business.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must have a minimum score of 65 points on the Nominee Assessment Grid
  • Must have achieved a minimum of 10 points for language ability
  • Must have a Level 6 in the IELTS (English), or Level 4 in the TEF (French)
  • Must have at least three years of experience in business management
  • Must have at least five years of experience in the business they propose to launch
  • Must have a verified net worth of at least CAD 500,000 net worth
  • Must have a verified net worth of CAD 300,000 in liquid assets
  • Must present a Resettlement Plan for shifting to Yukon and show the intent to live and run a business here

How It Works:

Ensure you are eligible to immigrate to Yukon and submit your application on the website. After you get approval, you must submit a business plan. You will also have to invest CAD 300,000 in the business and one-third of equity. You can apply for a temporary work permit to travel to the province and prepare for your business. You must also meet a Yukon Business Nominee Program (YBNP) representative and fulfill additional requirements. If you complete all mandatory requirements, you will get the support of the YBNP for permanent residence. A work permit will allow you to stay in the province until your permanent residence status is approved.

The Yukon Community Pilot

This pilot nominated immigrants to get a special work permit. It allows them to work for multiple employers in any Yukon community. The pilot will run till June 2023.

If you are provincially nominated, the Yukon Community Pilot can help you get a special work permit. It will allow you to work for multiple employers in one of the participating Yukon communities such as Whitehorse, Watson Lake, Dawson City, Haines Junction, Carmacks, and Carcross.

Minimum Requirements:

  • A nomination is a must by the territory
  • Two or three qualified offers for jobs in the same participating community
  • A signed letter of support released by the Yukon government
  • Must comply with work permit requirements
  • In addition, your jobs must be non-seasonal and total up to 30 hours every week.
  • Your work experience must reflect your capability to perform the specialized work

How It Works:

Make sure you are nominated for permanent residency by Yukon Territory. You must receive a signed letter indicating support by the local government and the authenticity of the job offers and the employer. It must also list other job-related details. This letter, duly accepted and signed by you, must be part of your application, including a nomination letter from the Government of Yukon. After completing the application in all respects, you can apply on the federal Canadian government website. You can also request a work permit. If approved, it will allow you to work for three employers in any community. The permit is valid for two years.
