Northwest Territories Nominee Program (NTNP)

Prospective immigrants looking for an opportunity to work and settle in Canada can apply for a Canadian Permanent Residence through the Northwest Territories’ Provincial Nominee Program (NTNP).

The Northwest Territories, nestled in the north part of Canada, is a beautiful wilderness with many thriving small communities. The area has a steady demand for skilled and other workers in sectors such as mining, energy and resources, construction, transport, tourism, and others. Immigrants with the experience and expert skills as required by the Northwest Territories Provincial Nomination Certificate can apply for Canadian Permanent Residence.

The NTNP approves application under two programs:

Northwest Territories Employer Driven Program and Northwest Territories Business Immigration Program

Northwest Territories Employer Driven Program – This program has three streams:

Express Entry System for Skilled Workers:

The NTNP Express Entry Stream for Skilled Workers has been developed to invite Express Entry candidates fulfilling the eligibility criteria for the Skilled Worker stream. Approved foreign nationals can apply to this stream.

Minimum Eligibility:

  • Must qualify for one of these – Federal Skilled Worker, Federal Skilled Trades, or Canadian Experience Class
  • Must fulfill the criteria for the Skilled Worker Stream under the NTNP Employer Driven Program
  • Submit the letter of acceptance from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s Express Entry Pool
  • Must have the Express Entry Profile Number and Job Seeker Validation Code issued by the IRCC.
  • Must show the intent of immigrating to the Northwest Territories

 Skilled Worker

This stream helps the Government of Northwest Territories to nominate skilled workers with an offer of employment from a local employer. Applicants must have worked in the same position for at least six months in the Northwest Territories.

Minimum Eligibility:

  • Show intent to settle in the province permanently
  • Must have a valid work permit and the legal status to work in Canada
  • Must be employed in the occupation mentioned
  • Have legal status to work and hold a valid work permit if currently residing in Canada
  • Must have a permanent job offer in the relevant occupation
  • Have the required certification or accreditation for the occupation
  • Must also have one year of full-time experience in the occupation
  • Must have the formal education or specialized training, certification, licensing, or registration for the specific position
  • Must have completed minimal language requirements

Critical Impact Worker

This stream helps the government of the Northwest Territories to select skilled or unskilled workers with an offer of employment from a local employer. Applicants must have worked in the NWT for a minimum of six months.

Minimum Eligibility:

  • Must show intention to settle in the NWT permanently
  • Must have the legal status to work in Canada as well as a valid work permit
  • Must show proof of permanent job in a relevant occupation
  • Have the required certification or accreditation for the occupation
  • Must have formal education or specialized training, certification, licensing, or registration for the specific position
  • Must meet the minimum language requirements

Northwest Territories Business Immigration Program

There is one stream under this program called Business Stream

Business Stream:

The NTNP stream is aimed at foreign nationals who have the ability to start, acquire, or invest in any existing business. The business must also provide economic benefit to the NW Territory and help create jobs.

Minimum Eligibility:

  • Must be able to invest at least CAD 300,000 for buying or launching a business within Yellowknife NWT or CAD 150000 outside the boundaries of Yellowknife NWT
  • Must have a net worth of at least CAD 150,000 for a business within Yellowknife NWT or CAD 250,000 for businesses outside the NWT
  • Must own at least 33.3 percent of the business
  • Make a good faith deposit of CAD 75,000 to be kept in a trust
  • Must have good knowledge of NWT and its economy
  • Must have language proficiency as required by the stream
  • Must have the qualifications and the experience to run the business successfully
  • Must have the communication skills to conduct business in the NWT and integrate into the local community
  • Must be able to implement the plan successfully
