Start-Up Visa Program Explained

Canada’s start-up visa program aims to provide entrepreneurs with the opportunity to immigrate to Canada to establish a new business. It is essential to demonstrate that your business is innovative, can compete with other similar enterprises globally, and, importantly, create new jobs for Canadians.

The Requirements

To be eligible for the program, you have to comply with the following requirements.

You Must Have A Qualifying Business

  • You must have a minimum of 10 percent of voting rights to the shares of the company
  • You must hold at least 50 percent of the voting rights to the shares along with that of the designated organization
  • You must carry a letter of support. This must be from a designated organization
  • You must show proof of support of an investor such as venture capital fund, business incubator, or angel investor.
  • You must show you have the support of an angel investor, venture capital fund, or business incubator.
  • You must present a unique way of pitching your business proposal.
  • A letter of support provided on successful pitching must form part of the application.

Comply With the Language Requirements

You must take a language test from an approved agency. This is necessary to show you have the minimum level of Canadian Language Benchmark or CLB. This benchmark must be for the French or English language. You must demonstrate proficiency in writing, reading, speaking, and, listening.

Provide Proof of Funds

You must prove you have the funds to support self and family/dependents. The funding amount to be demonstrated must match the number of dependents.

Eligibility Requirements

The eligibility requirements include a proof, such as a Commitment Certificate and Letter of Support. It must demonstrate that a designated organization supports your business. Fulfillment of this condition is crucial for the successful processing of your visa application. You are not required to invest your funds in this type of business.

If you meet all the eligibility requirements, you must secure funding of at least

  • $75,000 from a Canadian venture capital fund
  • $200,000 from a Canadian venture capital fund

The government of Canada must recognize the funding companies.
If your application is accepted into a recognized Canadian business incubator, no investment capital is required.

How To Apply For A Start-Up Visa

  • Fill out the Generic Application Form for Canada.
  • Click the “Validate” button on the form. Check if all the fields are filled and completed.
  • Print the validated application form, including the barcode page.
  • Sign and put a date on the form.

Complete the document checklist

  • Collect the documents in order, as mentioned
  • Place them all in a sealed envelope
  • Take a print of the checklist and attest your signature

This will form the cover page of your application.

Pay Your Application Fees

  • The fees include application processing fees for everyone listed on the application
  • Right of permanent residence fee
  • Third-party fees (for medical tests, police certificates, language testing, etc.
  • Biometric fees

It may take the concerned department at least 12 to 16 months to process the documents.

An incomplete application may get rejected. That’s why you must make sure everything is complete and in order. Next, put all the documents in a 9” X 12” envelope. Write ‘Start-Up Visa’ clearly on the outside of the envelope. Mail to the concerned department.
