The pandemic has made most of us realize the importance of healthcare and medical insurance.
You may be eligible for provincial or territorial health insurance in certain cases in Canada. This means you won’t have to spend anything if you avail health services here.
Let’s speak about Alberta first.
Albertas provincial healthcare plan is known as Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP).

Coverage – eligibility and wait time

Students

If you are a student, you are eligible for this plan if you have a Study Permit with a minimum time duration of a year (12 months) and you intend to reside in Alberta for the duration of at least 12 months.
If your Study Permit is valid only for 3-12 months, you can still be eligible if you write a letter stating your intention of residing in Alberta for a minimum of 12 months.

Do note that you will have to apply for your healthcare card as soon as possible. Your coverage shall begin when you enter Alberta or when you Study Permit begins, whichever comes later.

Temporary Workers

Temporary workers that have a Work Permit of over 6 months are eligible for this cover. This cover is valid from the date signed/date of arrival in Alberta (whichever comes later) till the expiry date written on the Work Permit.

Permanent Residents

All permanent residents who have established residence in Alberta stand eligible for this cover. It starts from the arrival date in Alberta, once all the requirements related to registration validation are met.

The Process of Application

If you have availed, received, and paid for any healthcare service before you applied for an Alberta healthcare card, you can be reimbursed for the same once you furnish the proof of eligibility to the AHCIP.
In your application, the following supporting documents need to be submitted:

  • Proof of Alberta residency
  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of your status in Canada

Just download the required form and fill it out.
Now, you can:

  • Apply personally to aregistry agent officealong with your signed form and the original supporting documents. This procedure has a 5-day processing time.
  • Mail your signed form and photocopies of all the supporting documents. This procedure has a 6-week processing time.

If your application is not received by the authorities within 3 months of your establishing residency in Alberta, your coverages effective date shall be determined once the application is received.
