Types of Housing in Canada

Types of Housing in Canada

It is never easy to move – whether it is to a new city in your own country or to a new country altogether. Finding a place you can call home can be a tough and sometimes extremely overwhelming task.

More than anything else, you would want to decide on the exact type of accommodation you would like to live in.If you are moving to Canada, it would be good for you to know about the various kinds of housing available here so that you can start looking for a place accordingly.

Houses

A house is usually bigger than an apartment. It has its own entrance and may have a yard too. It, in most cases, wont be sharing walls with any other building.

Houses are of several types. Lets understand a few here.

Detached House

A detached house is quite expensive as it offers ample privacy and space. It is considered to be ideal for families.

Semi-detached Houses

A semi-detached house is attached to another building on one side. Due to this factor, these are less costly than a fully detached house.

Duplex

A duplex is one house with two units. If you take one unit, while you will have separate entrances, you may have to share a wall or the yard area with the other unit.

Triplex

A house may be divided into three units. Then, it is called a triplex. Each unit has a separate entrance; however, they may share a wall or yard year.

Though not very common, there are fourplexes too – when a house has been divided into four units.

Rooming houses

This is when a house has several rooms which are rented out separately to individuals like students or single persons. All the tenants share some common areas like the kitchen, washroom, or living room.

Basements

There are generally two or more floors in most houses in Canada. Many owners rent out the basement of their homes to supplement their income.

Townhouses

This house has a common wall or two with other units. All of them are independently owned, usually single-family homes. Placed one after another, they look like a row of houses. Sometimes, they may have two or more stories too.

Apartments

Apartments can be of different sizes. They can be walk-up units or units situated in high-rise buildings. Also, they may be owned individually or by a property management company. Most apartments have shared amenities such as common rooms, fitness centers, and laundry areas.

Condominiums

A condois a unit in a high-rise building. These are usually owned by an individual and are costlier than apartments. You will have access to more amenities, like a pool, gym, party area, etc. You may have to pay a condo fee to use facilities like elevators, recreational areas, parking, etc. Some townhouses also follow the condo model.

Condo townhomes

These are quite like the traditional freehold townhomes. However, these are owned by a condo corporation. Some of these townhomes are stacked and you may have to share a floor or ceiling with a neighbor.

Bachelor units or studios

These units are present in both apartments and condos. Smaller in size, these units generally have a single room serving as the bedroom and the living area.

Homestays

Many families let out a single room in their homes for additional income. This type of housing is quite popular among international students. You do have the privacy of your room but you have to join the host family for meals and participate in their normal daily routine.

Bungalows

In an older style of home, bungalows usually have living and sleeping areas on a single floor. Some may have a basement thats been renovated into a usable space.

This kind of variety in types of houses can be very beneficial for any potential homeowner or renter since they have many different options to choose from. It stands to reason that the persons ultimate choice depends on factors such as location, needs, and budget.
