To be able to get a drivers license is considered a privilege and not a right in Canada. Also, high standards have been set for drivers and each province has its rules and regulations regarding the same.
Lets say you are in Newfoundland and Labrador – you should be aware of what you should carry along if you want to drive around here.

If you are a visitor

If you are from outside Canada and are visiting Newfoundland and Labrador, you should have a valid home country driver’s license.
Note that you can drive for up to three months here as a visitor.

If you are a student

If you are from outside Canada and are studying in Newfoundland and Labrador, you should have a valid home country driver’s license.
You can drive for up to three months here as a student. However, you are required to exchange your driving license for a Newfoundland and Labrador license.

If you are a new resident

As a new resident of Newfoundland and Labrador, you can change your home country driving permit to a Class 5 license within 90 days after taking residency.
In case your driving permitis from the following countries/territories:

  • Austria

  • France
  • Germany
  • Isle of Man
  • Ireland
  • Japan
  • Republic of Korea
  • Switzerland
  • United States

You can exchange it to either a Newfoundland and Labrador Class 5driver’s license or Class 6 (depending on the country).
In case your country is not on this list, you will need to undergo a complete drivers license examination, comprising knowledge, vision,and road tests.Also, you shall be placed in theGraduated Driver’s Licence Program.
