Political System

The British North America Act (BNA Act) perceives Canada as a constitutional monarchy. The reigning monarch of the United Kingdom (Queen Elizabeth II) is the sovereign of Canada. The BNA act brings together three British colonies, the Province of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. The Province of Canada includes Upper Canada (now Ontario) and Lower Canada (now Quebec).

The British parliamentary system h3ly influences Canada’s system of government and includes two houses. The Lower House or House of Commons comprises 338 members, and The Upper House or Senate has 105 members and represents all regions of Canada. The prime minister appoints members of the Senate.

Three levels of government

The responsibilities of governance in Canada are divided among three different levels of government as follows:

  • The Government of Canada –
The federal government looks after matters that influence the entire population. These include citizenship and immigration, international trade, and national defense.
  • Provincial and territorial governments –
These are responsible for the development of highways, healthcare, and education.
  • Municipal governments –
Local governments look after city streets, firefighting, and so forth.

Elections in Canada
Canada holds elections once every five years as per the constitution. There are different electoral districts according to geographical divisions. Presently, there are 338 electoral districts in Canada. In the House of Commons, the candidate securing the highest votes wins the election to represent the district. The election takes place by following the method of secret ballot.
