Newfoundland and Labrador

Newfoundland and Labrador

Have you been looking at different Canadian provinces wondering which one would be the best for you?

How about Newfoundland and Labrador? If you have a passion for retaining your links with history while still enjoying everything modern, this is the perfect place for you.

The Place

Newfoundland and Labrador is the most easterly Canadian province. It comprises two sections:

  1. The island of Newfoundland – situated at the mouth of the Gulf of St. Lawrence
  2. The mainland portion of Labrador

This is a strikingly historical place with its ancient history going back to centuries. In fact, a place at the northern tip of the island, called L’Anse aux Meadows, was discovered in 1960 to be the location of a Viking colony whose settlement was around a thousand years ago! In 1978, this area was named a Canadian UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In terms of linguistics, Newfoundland and Labrador is the most unified area with almost 98 percent of people speaking English here.

The explorer in you will rejoice at the chance of discovering rare and gorgeous flora and fauna in its six national parks and many provincial wilderness parks.

Weather

Unlike many other Canadian provinces, there are no extreme temperatures here. It enjoys a temperate marine climate which is influenced by coastal currents and icebergs. The summer time is quite pleasant but brief. The areas in the interior enjoy warmer mean temperatures.

In winter, the average temperature is close to 0°C (32°F) but the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the North Atlantic Ocean waters don’t let it drop further than that.

Living Cost

Newfoundland and Labrador offer a charming mix of rural and urban living. This is a stable area to live in and almost everything here is just minutes away from stunning coastlines and entrancing woodlands.

  • An average family’s income is lower than in the rest of the country, however, so are the rent prices. If you want to save up, you should rent an apartment away from the city centre as that would cost less.
  • The cost of living here is among the lowest in Canada.
  • This area has some of the lowest home prices in both Canada and North America.
  • St. John’s has the highest rate of homeownership in all Canadian provinces.

The economy here is driven mainly on the back of its primary industry – fishing. Many job opportunities also await those in the field of mining and natural resources.

Healthcare

Medical care is provided to all residents under the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Care Plan (MCP).

  • This comprehensive plan covers most costs related to physician services, such as:
  • visits to a doctor’s office or hospital
  • surgical and therapeutic procedures, along with pre-and post-operative care
  • maternity care
  • surgical-dental procedures deemed medically necessary
  • You will be eligible for it if you are a Canadian citizen or a landed immigrant who lives in Newfoundland for at least four months each year.
  • MSP does not cover a few non-medically necessary procedures.
  • It also does not pay for medicines.

Education

For those of you with children, you shall be happy to know that Newfoundland and Labrador offer a safe and supportive atmosphere for children to grow and learn. All public schooling is free of cost.

  • All students begin school at age 5, completing Kindergarten.
  • They then move on to grades 1 through 12 (usually completed by age 17).

This place is quite a popular choice for post-secondary education for students. This is because of its high quality of educational options and viable cost of living and tuition. Degrees, diplomas, and certificates are offered by both public and private institutions.
