British Columbia

British Columbia

Moving to Canada is the dream of many. This is because it is truly accepting of all religions, creeds, nationalities, and colors. Not only is this majestic land a feast for the eyes in terms of its natural beauty, its urban appeal is phenomenal.

Out of the several different provinces that call out to people, British Columbia (B.C.) can proudly proclaim to be one of the most enticing places for most of them.

The Place

Nestled between the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Rocky Mountains on the other, British Columbia is the westernmost, third-most populous province of Canada. Its largest city is Vancouver, which has almost 50 per cent of B.C.’s population.

If you are a nature/outdoors-lover, you will surely be glad to know that eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, seven national parks, seven recreational areas and one sanctuary call British Columbia home.

Weather

British Columbia has perfect weather. It does snow here, but just for around say ten days with depths under 2cm.

The summer months are mild, with temperatures hovering between 64°F (18°C) and 68°F (20°C). You can easily spend hours on the beach and enjoy outdoorsy activities to your heart’s content.

Living Cost

If you are looking to get competitive salaries, you should definitely look at moving here.

Many BC employers offer the best of incentives, including extended benefit plans, complete medical and dental coverage plans, along with great wages to their employees. This allows them to enjoy a high standard of living.

With many different industries like agriculture, health, manufacturing, forestry, etc., you can rest assured of finding superb career opportunities here. Also, since Canada’s population is aging, the demand for skilled labour/workers is on the rise, and British Columbia is not an exception to the rule.

Healthcare

If you move to British Columbia, you and your family can avail its reliable and excellent healthcare by enrolling in its Medical Services Plan.

  • Enrolling in MSP is mandatory for all eligible residents and dependents.
  • This plan is inclusive of all costs incurred from utilizing medically necessary insured doctor care.
  • Group plans administered by employers, pension plans, and unions are available for members and dependents.
  • MSP also takes care of diagnostic services, including X-rays.
  • In case you require supplementary services like chiropractic, acupuncture, naturopathy, massage therapy, etc., those too are covered by MSP.

Education

British Columbia has the honor of having the highest-ranking education system in Canada, which itself enjoys being ranked 3rd in the world in terms of quality education.

You can enroll your child into:

  • A public school – these are free for residents and some work-visa employees. If you want your child to study here, you can verify their eligibility by contacting the school district.
  • A private school – there are not many of these in British Columbia, and most of them are situated in areas with more foreign residents. Before you decide on a private school for your child, do check if it is registered with the Ministry of Education.
  • Childcare – you have to pay a certain fee to keep your child here. Every daycare/childcare person has to get a license if they watch more than two children.

In terms of post-secondary education, British Columbia gives its students a globally recognized seal of quality, called Education Quality Assurance (EQA). It is the first province in Canada to do so.

The University of British Columbia is the second-best university in Canada and is considered the twenty-sixth best university the world over.
