Express Entry (EE)

The Express Entry draw is basically designed for more eligible and skilled people from all over the world in order to meet the Canada’s future labour market needs. When the system was introduced in January 2015, the immigration federal target set by Canada through federal economic programs was 195,800 applicants. The Express Entry system was set to issue 91,800 invitations to apply (ITAs) for permanent residency in 2020, which was surpassed to 107,950. With over 1.2 million immigrants expected to be welcomed by 2022 and 2023, Express Entry system has been the obvious choice of the people because of the targets set for applicants which are:

  • 108,500 in 2021
  • 110,500 in 2022
  • 113,750 in 2023

The Express Entry system is expected to issue even more ITAs within the next two years because of the ongoing developments in the Canada’s global economic market.

How does Express Entry Work?

This system works under a two-step process where first you have to submit your profile and after that you receive an ITA. Submitting profile includes language test results, education credentials and a passport or travel document. If an ITA is received, you need to accept the invitation within 90 days and submit additional documents which include reference letter from each previous employer, identity documents, medical examination results, and clearance certificates.

Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)

This program focuses on recruiting people from countries abroad. This program is for the workers who have the skills, education, and work experience to contribute to the economy of a specific province or territory. As Canada’s economy is growing, the country is struggling to cope up with the fast growth of its economy. This means if you are qualified enough and possess the skills, you are more likely to be accepted by the country and chances of your hiring are more.

The Provincial Nominee Program targets to welcome between 64,000 and 81,500 immigrants in 2021. Each province and territory have its own immigration programs that target certain groups and requirements. There are 80 PNP programs from which you can choose. These can be advised by a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC) to choose the best program for you.

To start the process, a candidate is required to choose a province that they wish to live in. This province will influence the applicant’s application for nomination. You need to meet the eligibility requirements of the province that nominates you.

Can I immigrate to Canada without a job proposal?

The best course of action to immigrate to Canada without a job offer is through programs inside Express Entry which are the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) and Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP). There are two other initiatives which are the Post-Graduate Worker Permit and the Family Sponsorships Program. Both programs fit the needs because you don’t need a job offer to be eligible for either program.

Post Graduate Worker Permit (PGWP)

The Post-Graduate Worker Program (PGWP) is drawn to help international students who have completed a qualification from a Designated Learning Institute (DLI) acquire an open work permit that will permit them to work for any employer in Canada. The open work permit validity is based on the extent of the study program and can be valid for a maximum of three years.

You will have a maximum of 180 days after you receive your final marks to apply for the PGWP. If your study permit expires before you can get your final marks, the two options you have are:

  1. Apply for a visitor record to stay in Canada longer, or
  2. Leave Canada and apply for your PGWP

Requirements for PGWP

To be eligible for the Post-Graduate Worker Permit you must have:

  • Completed a study program (degree, diploma, or certificate) at a DLI for at least 8 months;
  • Been a full-time student in Canada for each semester; and
  • Graduated from a public post-secondary school (college, trade/technical school/university); or
  • Graduated from a Canadian private school that provides degrees under provincial law (as long as it leads to a degree as authorized by the province)

Ensure that your passport is valid for the length of your PGWP otherwise you’ll only be issued a PGWP that’s valid until your passport expires. To extend it you will need to apply on paper.

How Do I Immigrate With a Post-Graduate Worker Permit?

The Post-Graduate Worker Permit will authorize you to gain useful Canadian work experience and therefore be eligible for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) which means you are one step closer to being a permanent resident in Canada.

The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) was started for international graduate students to make the shift from temporary to permanent residence in Canada. The application process is done through the Express Entry system for those who express interest in immigrating to Canada. Interested candidates must have one year of skilled Canadian work experience.

Work Experience for the CEC

  • a full time position; or
  • the equivalent time in a part-time position;
  • legally obtained in Canada; and
  • jobs defined by the Canadian National Occupational Classification (NOC) as level 0, A or B

Family Sponsorships

Growing highly in popularity, the Family Sponsorship is a great path in the immigration to Canada in 2022. Even during the pandemic, Canada had over 24,000 new permanent residents arriving through the family class program within the first six months of 2020.

This Program reunites families by enabling adult permanent residents or citizens to sponsor a relative for immigration to Canada. To be eligible, the person seeking sponsorship must be a:

  • Spouse, common-law or conjugal partner
  • Dependent child
  • Parent
  • Grandparent
  • Sibling, nephew, niece, or grandchild under 18 years who is unmarried and whose parents are deceased

Who is eligible to sponsor?

You can sponsor your spouse, partner or dependent child if:

  • you are 18 years or older
  • you’re a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act
  • if you’re a Canadian citizen living outside Canada, you must show that you plan to live in Canada when the persons you want to sponsor become permanent residents
  • you’re able to prove that you’re not receiving social assistance for reasons other than a disability
  • you can provide for the basic needs of any persons you want to sponsor
